Embracing The Camera with friends

Embracing the camera with friends on a lovely sunny day…

embrace the camera

We hung out with friends and had a lovely walk and picnic in the park at Saltram House, then more walking and finally ended up here for a comfy sofa and something to drink 🙂

It was a gorgeous day.

And yes, that is a blue plastic clothes peg that Little Man is chewing on in the photos. We don’t go anywhere without them – they keep him busy and entertained, and distract him from making accidental phone calls on my mobile phone.

Birthday presents. Again.

Sniff, sniff. Apologies for the blurry, pixelated banner. Grrr. I worked on it all  weekend, trying to figure out the image editing tools, and after I had finally got it looking pretty and uploaded it, I realised I’d made it too small *tearing out hair*

I will hopefully have an improved version after next weekend. Hopefully.

I know that I am so drawing out this whole birthday thing, but I did mention previously that I was waiting for a part of my gift from LOML that still had to arrive in the post and that I would let you know about it. So at least you were warned.

And I figured that since I’m writing about birthday gifts, I might as well show you what else I got. But to make it fun (for me, anyway) it’s going to be in the form of cryptic clues. Answers on a postcard…

And before I give you the answers, I absolutely have to tell you  about my birthday treat from my friend who made the Cookie Dough Delight I went on and on and on about a while back. Yes, you guessed it – we went to Pizza Hut and had the real deal! Oh. My. Giddy. Aunt. It was spectacular!!!!!!!!!! And I am embarrassed at my own attempts to recreate it without even having tasted the original. Oh well, back to the drawing board with that one. I suspect I shall have some fun trying to perfect that 🙂

The moment you’ve all been waiting for (for, like, 10 seconds). Drumroll please. The solutions to my cryptic clues:

Super gadgety Babyliss curling tongs from T. Thanks my friend!

Now I’ve just to try figure out how to get my hair looking like all those pretty pictures in the online instructions…

Pretty bead bracelet from L. Such gorgeously summery colours, love it!

A friend made it – you can buy similar accessories from her here and here.

Ampersand necklace from LOML.

I helped to choose it because I had a few requirements… small and unobtrusive (check), hand stamped silver (check), typewriter-looking font (check).

We got it from here.

I was treated so well by all my friends… phone calls and messages, cards, a gift voucher for a swanky spa, wine… lucky me!

Thank you 🙂

Embracing The Camera In A Sunny Way

Tuesday 19th April 2011

On Tuesday we popped in at friends… I was not at all prepared for swimming! Though I had remembered sunscreen, hat, warmer clothes in case it was cooler when we walked home, a camera, sunscreen for me, water bottles for both us – you get the picture, right? I did manage to remember a lot. Just hadn’t thought about swimming stuff.

Fortunately LM’s friend had a swimming nappy and swim shorts for us to use.  How cute are those trunks?

And we had such fun splashing about.

Another first for Little Man 🙂

Anybody else embracing the camera this week?

Summer Fun

It feels like summer’s come early – we’re having a gorgeous spring… What is it about the sunny weather that makes people more sociable and friendly?

I love how – in England anyway – everyone smiles more, and neighbours stop to chat, and impromptu gatherings turn into meals, and a Sunday braai can stretch on into the evening until the last few rays of sunshine have disappeared: Nibble leftovers, garden cricket, children playing.

And for us, this time of year is exciting because it’s Little Man’s first spring. We’re loving the Easter school holidays, sunny walks and him discovering grass and twigs and the neighbours’ dogs and all that 🙂

Friends And Benefits

No, not friends with benefits! Tsk, tsk.

I was just thinking about the lovely weekend we’ve had, catching up with old friends and getting the chance to properly chat with friends we’ve only had time for quick hello‘s with recently. There’s something satisfying about spending time with people one feels comfortable with. You know, those people who – even if you don’t see each other often – you can just be with. And it feels like you’re just picking up where you left off, and the time that has passed since you last hung out doesn’t matter.

With the arrival of Little Man, our social activities drastically reduced, but we feel like we have the time and energy again to be sociable. That may seem a bit extreme to some people – it has been 8 months, after all – but for us, this is what we’ve needed… LM was not the easiest newborn, and we were pretty frazzled! I guess he wanted to make sure he had our undivided attention 🙂 And this sunny weather we’ve been having is the perfect excuse to hang out in a relaxed (and child-friendly!) way.

So, long may the ‘gather, barbecue and chatter‘ weather continue… summer’s coming. Get out the braai tongs, Pimm’s and sunscreen!

And, as an aside, I need to remember to take photos of these moments. Not just to make my blog posts a little more interesting, but to record these fabulous friendships. And have evidence that the sun does shine in England, lol.

A Sunny Scene

Embracing The Camera… It’s a Thursday thing.

I’ve realised that if my Thursday posts are going to actually be about Thursday, they’ll all be the same. We go to our church’s toddler group on a Thursday, so our ETC photos all land up being the we’ve been out this morning so I’m exhausted this afternoon kind of photo.

So, I’m going to be flexible with the day of the photo, and use any photo from the week so far. I guess as long as I’m getting at least one photo a week with me in it, that’s fine – that is the point of ETC after all.

So here goes…

Monday was  such a nice-weather day, made even nicer by a last minute lunch and play with some friends and their toddlers 🙂

After a salad and pizza lunch, we headed off to the park.

Sunshine and a Baby Sling 🙂

I think I’ll post the pizza base recipe next week – it’s a quick and easy cheat.

So, have you got a photo of you this week??

Tea for 2 or 3 or 4…

Yesterday I mentioned some spectacular food that a friend had made. The dessert was particularly awesome, and since dessert in general is my favourite food, that is what I am going to focus on for now.

My friends had recently been to Pizza Hut and shared their Hot Cookie Dough Dessert. And then decided they had to share the cookie dough love by recreating this treat for me. Big smile 🙂

OH. MY. HAT. It was awesome! It is basically a gigantic choc-chip cookie, eaten straight out of the dish. My friend also added marshmallows. A rocky road choc chip cookie piece of gorgeousness.

So I then did my best to recreate the dish myself. And here’s what I found (after googling and taste-testing):

Lizzie’s Cookie Dough Delight – A Dessert For Sharing

If you think the name’s a mouthful, you should actually try eating it.

Ok, that was lame. Sorry. Here goes:

2 and 1/2 cups flour (plain/cake)

pinch salt

1/2 teaspoon bicarb (baking soda)

170g/ 3/4 cup butter, melted

1 cup light brown sugar

1/2 cup white sugar

2 eggs

2 teaspoons vanilla essence

250 – 300g chocolate chips

Marshmallows if you’d like them.

1. Preheat oven to 160 deg C/350 deg F.

2. Stir flour, salt and bicarb together in a bowl.

3. In a separate bowl, mix the melted butter, sugar, eggs and vanilla until well blended.

4. Stir the dry ingredients to the butter mixture, then add choc chips (and marshmallows).

5. Spread evenly in an oven dish and bake for 10-15 minutes. The top should be golden, but adjust cooking time to your preference when it comes to how soft and doughy it is inside.

Serve with ice cream and chocolate sauce.

*I used El Cheapo cooking chocolate of all three sorts, broken into pieces, instead of traditional chocolate chips.

*I kept some chocolate aside and melted it down to drizzle over as a sauce once baked.

*I am admitting that actually I used too much chocolate. This is a momentous occasion – I did not think that was possible.

*Eating it straight out of the dish adds to the decadence of the dessert, but feel free to scoop out into bowls before topping with ice cream.
